Pros

Salary, pension scheme, health insurance

Cons

Micromanagement is a major problem that has been detrimental to morale and productivity. My manager is overly controlling and constantly looking over my shoulders. They created a toxic work environment where employees feel undervalued, demotivated, not empowered to contribute. Managers don't trust their employees and don't give them the autonomy to complete their tasks without unnecessary interference. Additionally, the lack of clear goals, strategies, and expectations has been confusing and frustrating. Without a clear direction it is difficult to understand what is expected of you and how you can contribute to the company's success. In my case, this led to a lack of motivation and engagement, as I felt unsure about how my work fits into the bigger picture. Even when I asked my manager the response was vague and not helpful at all. The great leaders framework that is always mentioned here in the comments is not preventing leadership to misbehave and they are definitely not leading by examples. Finally, the responsibilities of different teams were not clearly defined, which led to a lot of confusion and frustration when working on cross-functional projects. Overall, I would not recommend Personio to anyone looking for a structured and supportive environment that values clear communication, defined goals, measurable success, and growth. Believe me, this is a feeling shared in all departments.

Pros

- Salary is good on paper - Stock options look nice - WFH 100% of the time

Cons

- The pay looks good on paper but Personio will do everything to not promote people, I saw many engineers denied promotions that they deserved for a long time. - They use nonsense barriers for promotion to hold back well-deserved promotions. - The development environment and tooling are completely broken. - There is no engineering leadership at this company. - Company is run by product/business people with no engineering voice, so decisions are made haphazardly and engineering teams are left running to catch up. - Company has been replaced at nearly every level by ex-Facebook employees, importing an American-style work culture. - Claim to want to redesign the product, only to layoff all of the designers who have designed the new version of the product - Overtime is expected. Claim to be a "fast-paced start-up" as an excuse. - Cross-team alignment/collaboration is non-existent, everyone works in complete silos, demands come from other teams out of nowhere. Teams building the same services side-by-side, or teams building out functionality that nobody asked for. - The performance review process is a complicated mess, an Excel sheet where you are expected to fight for your job and argue for everything you've done. - Many employees have admitted to working on this Excel sheet after hours and on weekends - Unnecessary redundancies have cut understaffed teams even further than they already were. Personio wanted to pretend to be Facebook and do layoffs like all the other FAANGS and export Jobs to the US & Poland. - People were measured by story points, which were completely made up and not representative of actual work. - People who had no 1-1 with their managers only to be made redundant out of nowhere - Engineers were forced to move onto new teams and then made redundant because they didn't get up to speed quickly enough. Another review stated this and it rings true; They think they're a FAANG but they pay like Personio.

Pros

- Tech stack is interesting, there are engineering challenges to be solved, specially at their rate of hypergrowth (but you don't have time to do it properly, see below) - A good portion of people are nice

Cons

- A cult-like atmosphere where people idolise Personio and leaders of the company way too much. You must be a smiling, happy, Personio-loving employee otherwise you are weird! How could anyone not love Personio? - I was told before accepting my contract that I can get a raise after 6 months (probation) by talking to my manager. After joining I realised their process does not allow a raise before 1 year of being with the company, and that's very very optimistic, they rarely do that and they were very surprised that I asked for a raise so "early" as they say. They didn't take any accountability for what their own internal recruiting lead had promised me. Don't trust their promises. - Their processes are quite inflexible and very slow. The performance review cycle specially. The managers are powerless when it comes to company-level processes, and oh my, everything is a company-level process here. Performance review is done company-wide (and they have more than a 1000 employees, imagine how slow this company-wide process is), and managers don't have the power to do something like that outside the process. - They say we care about retention, but in reality they have no retention strategy: if you decide to leave because of other offers, the best they can offer you is promises of swimming in millions once they "moonshot". - High work load and intensity. Some of the teams have to maintain and develop very large areas with very little resources. - What ends up happening as a result of the not having enough people to address things in time, is that the managers get a tendency to micromanage their engineers and crunch them down to "numbers" to make sure they hit their targets.

You are correct, many of our teams are very busy as Personio is experiencing hypergrowth and reaching toward ambitious goals. We are actively working to solve this issue through our 2022 hiring plan, where each department and team lead is empowered to hire the roles they need to succeed. We have also recently rolled out a new performance, leveling, and salary review system to increase efficiency and continue to improve objectivity throughout the process. Each employee is evaluated by the same measurements and standards as their peers, without exception. While we understand that not every employee will be happy with the outcome of every performance review, we are committed to providing only a fair, objective review every time.
