Pros

Nice office with good views of Cork city.

Cons

In my department poor management and no transparency. For a graduate program there is very little structure around progression and some people have been graduates for more than 3 years with very little industry training. Pay is remarkably low compared to the rest of the market, no bonus structure, miniscule yearly increase which was sometimes skipped, no shares, poorly subsidised lunches. Management appear to be detached from the work of their subordinates.

Pros

- Some of the best people to work with (but nearly all of those people do not work there anymore) - Decent holiday allowance - Good location in the heart of Cork city

Cons

JCI are completely inconsistent with how they promote people and give raises. It does not seem to really matter how much work you do/how much responsibility you have.. it's just who your manager is. Depending on what business unit you are in/what manager you have (not something you pick when you start there) you will be promoted faster. One of the managers was also a senior manager (he is now the head of tech comms) and all of his staff got promoted before others who had worked in JCI longer. People also get higher pay increases/performance review marks depending on their business unit. My team was understaffed when a coworker quit (and was never replaced). I took all of that coworkers work on top of my own. I knew that coworker made at least 10K more than what I made when they left. I wasn't promoted for another 2 and a half years. I consistently didn't get "Exceeds Expectations" in my performance reviews due to reasons beyond my control such as not having all of our documents in DITA (which we did not have the time or resources to do). Staff can only be promoted if someone quits (which is hardly a morale booster) so you have to actively hope more people want to leave in order to get a promotion. However, some people who threaten to quit have been able to secure raises/promotions outside of this rule. The best way to make a decent wage from working here is to quit and come back, as they have money that they can use to offer people to return to work for them (but won't use it on staff that currently do). There are so many other technical writer positions these days with better pay and benefits.

Pros

Nice modern building in city centre. Nice roof top terrace. Nice foyer and front desk. Advantageous for the work life balance. Nice meeting rooms and library. There is room in there to take calls. Very good sports and social committee.

Cons

In my department, poor processes. Poor management. Poor quality documentation produced. Poor training. Poor support. Centralised production for cost saving but little else. Not information development in a known professional sense. Reminiscent of a large outsourcing operation in the third world.
