What happens when we attempt to see the world through a new perspective?
“At many companies, managers will typically tell engineers what to do and how to solve a problem. At Facebook, we tell engineers, “Here’s the problem - now go fix it!” Everyone, no matter their level, has the ability to push back on ideas. If a manager is telling you to work on something that you don’t find meaningful, it's up to you to tell him or her what’s going to have more impact.” John Affaki - director of engineering. We’re looking for more tech talent to join our growing teams. Find out more here! www.fb.careers/johnengdirector

“Because the majority of people living in the U.S. use high-end devices, it’s easy to forget that a lot of people in other parts of the world largely use older phone models, and these devices tend to have less storage. The performance team plays a crucial role in making sure people all over are able to access and use Instagram. We want everyone to be able to use our app to share their photos and videos.” - Mona, performance engineer for Android Instagram. “Tech has been my passion pretty much my entire life starting from middle school when somehow I got my hands on my parent’s ZX Spectrum computer. Later I got my masters degree in Computer Science in Ukraine which pretty much defined my further career. I started working with Android around 8 years ago and have loved it ever since. I'm an Android developer at Facebook. My role is building robust scalable infrastructure around News Feed to make sure that numerous product teams that work with it on a daily basis can ship their products fast and in the most efficient way. Android UI engineers at Facebook utilise every possible outlet available in Android framework to make UI more engaging, more performant and meaningful. Very often we face challenges that no one else in the industry has faced before, so knowing how UI works inside out is a critical skill in tackling those challenges. We take Android UI rendering to the next level by constantly exploring things that no one else has tried yet."
Instagram recently launched Type Mode, a new way to post creative, dynamic text styles and backgrounds to Stories. Learn more about the approaches the team took in building for both iOS and Android platforms.
